Why Is My Essay Flagged as AI?

Human writing can trigger an AI detector because a score reflects pattern similarity, not proof of who wrote the essay. Here is what to check and what evidence to preserve.

An AI detector can flag an essay you wrote yourself. The result is a probability or pattern-matching signal, not a record of authorship. A high score does not establish that a student used AI, and rewriting honest work simply to satisfy one detector can make the situation harder to explain.

Why human writing can look “AI-generated”

Text detectors compare features of a passage with patterns associated with human and machine-written samples. Human and AI writing overlap. Formal academic tone, predictable transitions, repeated sentence structures, common explanations, and highly edited prose can all resemble patterns found in generated text.

Sample length and the detector's training data also matter. A 2025 study of GPTZero found that its human-written essay results fluctuated and included false positives, leading the authors to advise against relying on a detector alone. A 2026 mathematical analysis goes further: when a system does not know an individual student's normal writing distribution, overlap between different students' writing and AI output creates an unavoidable trade-off between detection and false accusations.

What to do before changing the essay

  1. Save the submitted version. Do not overwrite the exact file or cloud document that was flagged.
  2. Export version history. Keep timestamps, revision history, tracked changes, outlines, notes, and earlier drafts.
  3. Collect your sources. Preserve reading notes, browser history where appropriate, citation-manager records, and the sources referenced in the paper.
  4. Read the assignment's AI policy. Separate prohibited generation from allowed spelling, citation, translation, or accessibility assistance.
  5. Ask what evidence is being considered. Request the detector name, the exact passage, the report, and the formal review or appeal process.

The ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies teacher guide describes drafts, validation tasks, and student questioning as ways to verify work. Its policy example also gives students an opportunity to provide evidence of authorship. Your institution may use a different process, but the principle is useful: authorship should be evaluated with evidence and conversation, not a score in isolation.

Do not optimize your essay for a detector score

Running the same text through several detectors can produce different percentages without resolving who wrote it. Replacing ordinary words, adding deliberate errors, or using an “AI humanizer” to lower a score may weaken the essay and remove the revision trail that supports your account.

If you revise, revise for the assignment: strengthen evidence, clarify your reasoning, correct mechanical errors, and keep each version. What a useful authorship explanation looks like

Be specific and factual. Explain when you began, how you selected the thesis, which sources changed your argument, and how the draft developed. Avoid arguing that the detector is “always wrong”; you only need to show why its result is not sufficient evidence in your case.
